Liebherr LRB 155 Breaking Ground in India
Liebherr piling and drilling rig LRB 155 is helping Menard Asia in India for a design and build ground improvement project from Hindalco's Muri aluminium plant in Jharkhand.

Menard, a global design and build ground improvement company having presence across the globe has bagged under the umbrella of Menard Asia in India a design and build ground improvement project from Hindalco Industries at its Muri aluminium plant near Ranchi in Jharkhand. In order to execute the project, Menard has imported a Liebherr piling and drilling rig type LRB 155. The idea is to increase the load bearing capacity of the ground so that a flexible retaining wall could be built over the existing dumping location which will act as a retention on the perimeter of the area for the waste coming out from the aluminium plant.

The 'LRB series' of drilling and piling rigs manufactured by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, Austria, are special deep foundation machines with various applications, which make it a class apart from the others. These machines are highly productive and applications performed by these machines include among others double rotary drilling, jetting, pressing, soil mixing, numerous ground improvement techniques, using ring vibrator or hammers, Kelly drilling, and continuous flight auger.

Menard in India has been using the Liebherr LRB 155 for one of its patented ground improvement methods Controlled Modulus Columns. A specially designed auger powered by the LRB 155, which provides substantial torque capacity and high static down thrust, displaces the soil laterally with virtually no spoil or vibration. During the auger extraction process, a column is developed by pressure grouting to achieve a predetermined stiffness ratio with the surrounding soil. This results in a composite soil/cement ground improvement system and can act as a replacement of pile foundation in special cases.

In general, diameter of the CMCs can be designed in the range of 250 to 420 mm terminating at the designed depth and spacing based on the load requirement and settlement behaviour of the sub-surface structure.

The core of the Liebherr drilling and piling rigs is the in-house developed Litronic? control system. The Litronic? control system is based on a Canbus system of the latest generation which provides not only clear information on operation and application data but also on service requirements and possible defaults. To add more to the existing features is the smartly developed Liebherr Process Data Recording system PDE? which constantly records the relevant process data during the working process. This PDE system is operated via the touchscreen monitor provided in the cabin. The operator can enter various details (eg, jobsite name, pile number, etc). This data is stored on a compact flash memory card which can be easily transferred to a computer. A further enhancement is the PDR system process data reporting which generates reports. These reports can be printed directly or stored as pdf files and can be displayed in various languages.

The powerful and fuel efficient
450 kW diesel engine ensures enough power for all suitable applications. No additional power pack is required; this saves fuel and operating costs. Apart from the easy and self-assembly features, the low weight and compact design makes road transportation easy. Liebherr has optimised the cost-effectiveness of its piling and drilling rigs during operation and consistently minimised the costs per production. Reliable piling and drilling rigs with maximum cost-effectiveness are the result.
